Hey everyone! We’re super excited to share the amazing story of Camila Monteiro, one of our awesome students at Rabaterapia. Camila tells us all about her journey from Brazil to Montreal and how she found a second home at our dance studio. Come along as we explore her experiences, emotions, and the dreams she’s achieved.
Raba: Hi Cami! How are you? Your perspective is valuable for helping others understand the essence of what we do, so thank you very much for sharing your experience! Here’s the list of questions! Feel free to write as much as you want, and if you want to skip a question, that’s okay too 🙂
When did you arrive in Montreal? Why did you come here (study, work, travel)? Did you come alone? Do you have children? Add any other information you think is necessary.
I arrived in Montreal a little over a year ago (2022) with my husband and my dog. Our first attempt failed when a visa was denied after we had already bought tickets and sold everything in Brazil (don’t do that). But we didn’t give up on the dream, reapplied for the visa, and arrived here in December 2022. I came studying International Business while he worked, but of course, I couldn’t just study, and in my second month here, I already got a job in my field of marketing. I was volunteering at a film festival, besides continuing to run my business in Brazil and creating travel content on my social media. I’ve had many ups and downs here in Canada, but giving up never crossed my mind. We’ve had problems with college, visas, the apartment, changes in laws, but everything is worth it when we look out the window and realize we are living a dream.
What attracted you most to Raba? Was it the dance, the connection with Brazilian culture, the music? All of that, none of that? Tell us…
Cami: I already dreamed about Raba before even arriving in Canada. I started following Pri when I decided to come here and ended up following the birth of Raba through her stories. I joined the first Telegram group (just to snoop around), watched the first Saturday class, felt the excitement of both, started following Gui, and fell in love with the project before I even had my visa. When my visa was denied, one of the things that made me feel bad was not being able to go to the first Baile da Raba; I remember crying a lot watching the videos haha. And who would have thought that less than a year later, I would be at the Carnival Ball shaking it with you all and then performing at the Halloween Ball?! My first class at Raba was a dream come true, and I remember crying at the end because I felt like I had finally arrived in Montreal and was living everything I had dreamed of one day. Thank you for not giving up on this beautiful project.
How would you describe the atmosphere at Rabaterapia? What makes it special, especially compared to other dance schools (if you’ve had the experience)?
Cami: Definitely, the Brazilian vibe of welcoming and caring, even with people we don’t know, is what makes this place even more special. Everyone feels welcome at Raba, even if they don’t know anyone.
What physical and mental benefits have you experienced since you started dancing with us?
Cami: Many times when I was going through a difficult moment in the immigration process, not wanting to leave the house, and feeling down, Raba helped me. The energy we feel in the class and the excitement that remains after the class helped me many times to get out of the slump.
If you could describe yourself before and after Raba, how would you describe yourself?
Cami: Before joining Raba, I was shy and hesitant about dancing. After experiencing the community and the joy of dance, I’ve become more confident and open. It’s been a transformative experience that has helped me embrace my true self.
Can you share a memorable experience you had with us? Something that made you feel part of a community?
Cami: One of the most memorable experiences was attending the Carnival Ball and performing at the Halloween Ball. It was amazing to be part of such vibrant events and feel the support and love from everyone. It truly felt like being part of a big, loving family.

Do you believe our classes are accessible to people of all experience levels?
Cami: I believe so, especially now with the course. Even those who have never danced can keep up. I haven’t participated in other classes yet, but I can say that Gui’s classes are very welcoming and accessible to anyone open to learning!
In your opinion, what does Rabaterapia do to create a welcoming environment for people of different backgrounds and abilities?
Cami: The environment is non-judgmental; everyone feels embraced and has a space to call their own. I feel that even coming from different backgrounds and states in Brazil, everyone respects each other and feels free to be themselves. The teachers also make every effort to make everyone feel welcomed, both in terms of language and culture.
Have you made new friends or meaningful connections at the dance school? How has dancing helped to create relationships and a sense of belonging?
Cami: Yes, I’ve made many friends and meaningful connections at Rabaterapia. Dancing together creates a bond that’s hard to find elsewhere. It feels like being part of a community where everyone supports each other, both inside and outside of class.

What advice would you give to someone considering joining Rabaterapia?
Cami: Just go for it! I had never danced before my first class at Raba; I was always shy and still think I’m awkward. But I think Raba is the best place for those who are shy because it’s a judgment-free environment, and no one is going to be watching you. It’s the perfect place to lose your shyness and start dancing while having fun.
How do you see Rabaterapia contributing to the dance scene in Montreal and promoting Brazilian culture in the region?
Cami: I’m so proud when I see foreigners in the classes and at the Raba parties, a sign that you are bringing our culture to the world! I see Raba in the future dominating Canada, opening several branches, and becoming a reference in the dance studio market.
Camila’s journey at Rabaterapia is a beautiful testament to the power of dance and community.
