Hey Montreal! So, you’ve decided to try a dance class, amazing! Maybe it’s the infectious beats of Pop Funk, the empowering challenge of Heels, or the rhythmic energy of Step. That’s exciting! But then, the big question hits: “What do I even wear?”
Don’t sweat it! (Well, you will sweat, but not from wardrobe worries!). Figuring out what to wear to your first dance class is a common thought, especially for beginners. The good news? At Rabaterapia, our vibe is all about fun and comfort, not fashion. This guide will help you pick the perfect beginner dance outfit so you can focus on the moves, not your clothes.

The Golden Rule: Comfort is King (or Queen!)
Forget fancy leotards or specific “dance” attire. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and can move freely. Your Montreal dance studio dress code at Rabaterapia is essentially: whatever makes you feel good and lets you unleash your inner dancer!
Here’s a breakdown for our different classes:
For Pop Funk & Step Workout:
- Tops: A t-shirt, tank top, or sports bra are all perfect. Choose breathable fabrics that will keep you cool as you sweat.
- Bottoms: Leggings, joggers, shorts, or even comfortable sweatpants work great. Avoid anything too restrictive or so loose it could trip you up.
- Shoes: Supportive athletic shoes (sneakers) are essential. Think cross-trainers or running shoes that offer good cushioning and support for energetic movement.

For Heels:
- Tops: Again, comfortable tops like tanks or t-shirts.
- Bottoms: Leggings or shorts are usually preferred as they allow for full leg movement and show the lines of your legs, which can be helpful for the choreography.
- Shoes: This is key! You’ll need dance heels (often referred to as “character shoes” or specific dance boots) or comfortable, sturdy heels that you can move in safely. Make sure they have ankle support and aren’t too slippery. If you don’t have dance heels yet, you can start in socks or flat dance shoes, but good heels will make the experience much better. Don’t wear your best going-out heels if they’re not stable!
- Knee Pads: Highly recommended! Many Heels choreographies involve floor work, so knee pads will save your knees.

For Yoga:
- Tops: Any comfortable t-shirt, tank top, or long-sleeved top that allows for a full range of motion. Avoid anything too baggy that might fall over your head in inversions.
- Bottoms: Leggings, yoga pants, or comfortable shorts are ideal. They should be stretchy and allow you to move freely through different poses.
- Shoes: Barefoot is best for yoga! You can wear socks for warmth before/after class, but take them off during practice for better grip.
- Bring your own mat: This is usually recommended for hygiene and personal comfort.
